چکیده

Abstract A functional test to verify the proper and accurate measurement capability of an L-band fully polarimetric noise injection radiometer is presented. The test is designed specifically for the MDPP-2 (MIRAS Demonstrator Pilot Project 2) NIR (Noise Injection Radiometer), which has two functions: (1) to calibrate the MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis) instrument by measuring a noise source and (2) to measure the brightness temperature of the target scene with fully polarimetric capability i.e. to measure the modified Stokes parameters. The second one is discussed in this paper. The calibration procedure using the sky as the reference source is briefly described and a measurement simulating the actual brightness temperature scene measurement is introduced and the uncertainties involved are discussed.

Polarimetric Microwave Radiometer Calibration

A polarimetric radiometer is a radiometer with the capability to measure the correlation information between vertically and horizontally polarized electric fields. To better understand and calibrate this type of radiometer, several research efforts have been undertaken. 1) All microwave radiometer measurements of brightness temperature (7B) include an additive noise component. The variance and ...

Development and Characterization of Fully Polarimetric Noise Injection Radiometer for MIRAS

An L-band noise injection radiometer (NIR) has been designed and implemented by Helsinki University of Technology Laboratory of Space Technology for the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission of ESA [1]. The work is performed as a part of ESA’s MIRAS Demonstrator Pilot Project-2 (MDPP-2) under a subcontract for EADS-CASA. Other partners in the MDPP-2 NIR project are Toikka Engineering ...

Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) L-Band Microwave Radiometer Post-Launch Calibration

 Abstract— The SMAP microwave radiometer is a fully-polarimetric L-band radiometer flown on the SMAP satellite in a 6 AM/ 6 PM sun-synchronous orbit at 685 km altitude. Since April, 2015, the radiometer is under calibration and validation to assess the quality of the radiometer L1B data product. Calibration methods including the SMAP L1B TA2TB (from Antenna Temperature (TA) to the Earth’s surf...

A correlated noise calibration standard for interferometric, polarimetric, and autocorrelation microwave radiometers

A new type of calibration standard is presented which produces a pair of microwave noise signals to aid in the characterization and calibration of correlating radiometers. The Correlated Noise Calibration Standard (CNCS) is able to generate pairs of broad bandwidth stochastic noise signals with a wide variety of statistical properties. The CNCS can be used with synthetic aperture interferometer...

Multifrequency Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Observations of Sea Ice

The first known fully polarimetric airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data set of sea ice is introduced. Images were acquired in the Beaufort, Bering and Chukchi seas in March 1988, during a campaign for validation of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Special Sensor Microwave Imager radiometer ice products. Statistics of the magnitude, phase and polarization of complex backscattered...
